Fun and rewarding, but very membership oriented

As a bookseller, typically most of the day is ringing up customers, and in between filling online orders/arranging and restocking shelves, and whichever section duty you're assigned to.I learned how to build great displays and keep things orderly as well as time management and online order input.Management were great but laser focused on new memberships, unrealistic goals when most people who want one have one already and it's a busy holiday rush for customers and staff alike.Culture is great, very relaxed and personal interests and specialties are rewarded.Hardest part is pushing memberships to meet the quota, especially for temp hires, you're basically done if you can't make a new member per hour or two.Enjoyed talking to people about books and recommending new stuff, as well as designing and implementing the displays.

Read anything on break, great environment, chance for full time if you're a good salesperson
缺点
Sales dependent, usually only hires temp work, holiday rush can get hectic

It is a very nice place to work with a nice discount on books and other items in the store. It can get pretty crazy in the middle of the holiday season so you kind of have to be on your game when working there.

Always Understaffed

Started in late 2000’s and was a fun place to work with lots of different positions available. Eventually all roles would be merged together to the point of doing the work of 2 or 3 people with barely above minimum wage pay.

I have the best time working at Barnes and noble, the pay isn’t that great at $13/hour minimum (Florida) but you get great discounts of 50% off books and cafe items, 40% off stationary and 30% off of games, toys and collectibles. Where I work it’s pretty laid back from the environment to my coworkers and managers because it’s just elderly mainly that come in to shop but there are some youngsters as well lol. The staff is amazing and so nice, it definitely feels like a family environment at times. I usually opt to spend all day working more hours just because of how much I enjoy being there and how laid back it is. The holidays it can get a little crazy but after that it’s smooth sailing. Highly recommend!

Bad managers, toxic work environment, low pay

When I started here, everything was amazing. Now after a couple of years, it is no longer. The training was rushed and not well done, to this day I was still learning things. If you have even the slightest social anxiety, they will indirectly pick on you. If you open up about mental health issues once, they walk around you on glass. Everyone expects you to always take initiative first and never the other way around. Management is all over the place:- Managers have poor communication with booksellers- They think they are high up there, and booksellers do their dirty work. - Managers expect you to work this job perfectly while being part-time and getting paid minimum wage. As per being a barista, there is no raise for being cross-trained. Barnes & Noble doesn't know much about hygiene and cafe cleaning standards are very low. Just recently the company has decided to create a tip jar, after not being allowed to accept tips.As a part-time worker who held this job in high school and the first months of college, it is a pretty work/life balance. Schedules are inconsistent. This is a really good job for high schoolers and a temporary holiday position for college breaks. But once you grow up, you'll realize you deserve better.

I personally have nothing but positive things to say about working for Barnes and Noble. I’ve worked in 2 different locations and they’ve both been wonderful. I got real lucky working with such awesome coworkers and the management really cares.

It’s like any corporate job- there’s always the head guys somewhere reinventing the wheel. But the job itself is fun if you love books, quite busy & demanding, and always entertaining. The best part is getting g to check out new books & having great co-workers.

Good retail job but doesn't pay a lot

Barnes and Noble was a good company to work for but it doesn't pay a lot. It's awesome to surrounded by books and other types of media although it feels very corporate.
