pretty monotonous but overall not that bad. Friendly coworkers, good employee discount. The work environment is filled with nice people.low pay for the workload

Stressful environment

What is the best part of working at the company?Being able to buy books at a discountWhat is the most stressful part about working at the company?Every aspect of the job was stressful. What is the work environment and culture like at the company?Fellow cowokers are very well educated, but the company as a whole is extremely demanding and never satisfied. What is a typical day like for you at the company?Busy 24/7 with very little time for breaks

Fun and rewarding, but very membership oriented

As a bookseller, typically most of the day is ringing up customers, and in between filling online orders/arranging and restocking shelves, and whichever section duty you're assigned to.I learned how to build great displays and keep things orderly as well as time management and online order input.Management were great but laser focused on new memberships, unrealistic goals when most people who want one have one already and it's a busy holiday rush for customers and staff alike.Culture is great, very relaxed and personal interests and specialties are rewarded.Hardest part is pushing memberships to meet the quota, especially for temp hires, you're basically done if you can't make a new member per hour or two.Enjoyed talking to people about books and recommending new stuff, as well as designing and implementing the displays.

Read anything on break, great environment, chance for full time if you're a good salesperson

Sales dependent, usually only hires temp work, holiday rush can get hectic

Great Company

I loved working there! Worked with schools, educators, institutions and corporations. Enjoyed pretty much everything about it. Good work/life balance!

It’s okay, calm, co workers kinda sucked tho

The hours were very flexible which I liked but ended up barely getting scheduled. Co workers weren't that great tho, a few treated customers poorly and co workers worse

Good perks! Lots of people

It is a very nice place to work with a nice discount on books and other items in the store. It can get pretty crazy in the middle of the holiday season so you kind of have to be on your game when working there.

great place

great place to work for and at I loved it and it was very beneficial to me and my character I love everything about working here I loved the hours now and always

Productive and fun to be working in

What is the best part of working at the company? The work environment is calm and nice to work with. What is the most stressful part about working at the company? The theft that happens sometimes What is the work environment and culture like at the company?Good and calm employment are friendly What is a typical day like for you at the company?Fast and efficient you learn a lot

“I visited this bookstore and was impressed by the selection – they had a great variety of books and the staff were knowledgeable and helpful. It was a great experience.”

Always Understaffed

Started in late 2000’s and was a fun place to work with lots of different positions available. Eventually all roles would be merged together to the point of doing the work of 2 or 3 people with barely above minimum wage pay.

So much fun

I have the best time working at Barnes and noble, the pay isn’t that great at $13/hour minimum (Florida) but you get great discounts of 50% off books and cafe items, 40% off stationary and 30% off of games, toys and collectibles. Where I work it’s pretty laid back from the environment to my coworkers and managers because it’s just elderly mainly that come in to shop but there are some youngsters as well lol. The staff is amazing and so nice, it definitely feels like a family environment at times. I usually opt to spend all day working more hours just because of how much I enjoy being there and how laid back it is. The holidays it can get a little crazy but after that it’s smooth sailing. Highly recommend!

Discounts, flexible with hours, friendly environment, patiently train you

Minimum wage could be a little more, like $15/hour at least

Great place to work no growth

Great overall company to work for. Amazing benefits pays decent but no growth opportunities due to constantly changing CEOs. Overall management has no direction and innovation to compete with companies that do focus more on innovation

It’s a lot, for better or for worse

So far I’ve really enjoyed working here! The environment is welcoming and I was able to hop right in! My only issue is being called almost daily by management asking to cover shifts when I’ve already given my availability

Bad managers, toxic work environment, low pay

When I started here, everything was amazing. Now after a couple of years, it is no longer. The training was rushed and not well done, to this day I was still learning things. If you have even the slightest social anxiety, they will indirectly pick on you. If you open up about mental health issues once, they walk around you on glass. Everyone expects you to always take initiative first and never the other way around. Management is all over the place:- Managers have poor communication with booksellers- They think they are high up there, and booksellers do their dirty work. - Managers expect you to work this job perfectly while being part-time and getting paid minimum wage. As per being a barista, there is no raise for being cross-trained. Barnes & Noble doesn't know much about hygiene and cafe cleaning standards are very low. Just recently the company has decided to create a tip jar, after not being allowed to accept tips.As a part-time worker who held this job in high school and the first months of college, it is a pretty work/life balance. Schedules are inconsistent. This is a really good job for high schoolers and a temporary holiday position for college breaks. But once you grow up, you'll realize you deserve better.

Paid breaks, great discount, friendly coworkers

Management, low pay, inconsistent schedules

Most enjoyable work experience I’ve ever had

I personally have nothing but positive things to say about working for Barnes and Noble. I’ve worked in 2 different locations and they’ve both been wonderful. I got real lucky working with such awesome coworkers and the management really cares.

Flexible schedule, discounts on books

Fun & interesting place to work

I really enjoyed most aspects of working at Barnes & Noble, from helping customers find books & giving book recommendations to stocking shelves to cashiering. I also felt very supported by the management.

Decent ppl, sane hours. No real complaints. Just don't like fighting wirh people who want to use Starbucks rules on refills and ask everyone if they are a member. Why can't we let people live their best lives

Understaffed and management didn't really care about being flexible or care about what the cafe workers went through. Couldn't maintain a good work/life balance. Made good money but the job definitely takes a toll on you.

Its nice there and the people are nice. They treat you equally and theres so many options you can take. The pay is good. They pay you well and can enjoy selling things.

Fun place to work with great co-workers!

It’s like any corporate job- there’s always the head guys somewhere reinventing the wheel. But the job itself is fun if you love books, quite busy & demanding, and always entertaining. The best part is getting g to check out new books & having great co-workers.

Good retail job but doesn't pay a lot

Barnes and Noble was a good company to work for but it doesn't pay a lot. It's awesome to surrounded by books and other types of media although it feels very corporate.
