Nice Place to work

The office was nice and very invested in each employee. Time was flexible, as long you got your work done, you can come and go as you please. It was completely different from Big4, where you were definitely just a number.

Great place to work

BDO is a great place to start your career whether that is through a co-op opportunity or right after graduation. They really enjoy promoting from within so if you are an all star, you will get promoted in your role. The benefits are great, work/life balance is prioritized but is hard to manage in human resources and recruitment. Overall, a great place to work and they are a top employer.

Good company, going through changes

When I started at BDO I really appreciated the culture and work life balance. Over the last few months there has been increasing productivity monitoring, unrealistic billable hour goals, and additional things that make you feel less like a person, more just like a revenue generator. Lots of layoffs in the last few months as well, especially in Advisory. I am wary of where the company is headed in the future.

It’s a great training ground for accounting graduates and aspiring CPAs. A bit challenging when it’s busy season, but it’s worthwhile if you enjoy learning.

Good work life balance

The Partners I work for are amazing. They are supportive, kinds and offer a really great balance between work and home. It does however get incredibly busy during tax time and that can be stressful.

Good benefits and perks but stressful environment

Busy season is minimum expected 9 hours a day. You can be booked on multiple files or have overlapping files with the expectation to work weekends and overtime to get everything done.

Depending on the team or project you're in, it's a great place to work. Gets crazy during the busy season, which is the standard for public accting. Otherwise, lots of room for growth.

Starting to work more like the Big 4, obtaining much larger engagements and working across different teams spread out across the US and not necessarily within the Houston office. Strong push on hours but at a certain point you would expect target billable hours to reduce when reaching manager level.

Lost

BDO Norfolk started as a small local accounting office and is struggling to adapt to being a part of a huge company. It's caught in a limbo between old and new, and new hires get neglected and undeveloped.

Not stimulating. Bad culture, no care or concern. Made to feel you're not worthy and are insignificant.

BDO LLP as an employer leaves much to be desired, and I cannot express enough my deep dissatisfaction and negative feelings about my experience with them. Let me elaborate on the numerous issues that make this company an incredibly frustrating and unfair place to work.Firstly, one of the most glaring problems at BDO LLP is their abysmal compensation structure. On average, they bill employees at a staggering 10 times their actual salary. This means that despite putting in countless hours of hard work and dedication, we are grossly underpaid for the value we bring to the company. It's an exploitative practice that only benefits the company's bottom line, while disregarding the well-being and financial security of their employees.Adding insult to injury, the salaries at BDO LLP are shockingly low across the board. What's even more infuriating is the fact that they pay recent graduates salaries that are comparable to, or even lower than, those given to individuals who have not pursued higher education. This completely devalues the efforts and investments made by graduates to attain a degree. It's an injustice that the pay off for obtaining a degree is practically non-existent within this organization, thanks to the misguided decision-making of the CEO, who himself is a school leaver.

Fast paced and unorganized

it was too fast paced and everything was rushed... my time as an intern there I didn't really get to apply the skills I learned in school, but I was blindly doing what was told

Layoffs

They over-hired last year and there have been recent layoffs. Not a lot of transparency about if or when more layoffs will come and people are nervous.

Good experience, long hours

Good experience for CPA students. Firm will also cover the cost of CPA fees and provide study tools. Long hours during busy season, but that is to be expected for the industry.
