Good stepping stone

It’s a good stepping stone job to get experience you can take somewhere else, if you’re younger and don’t have many bills or a family life to balance it could work out but the pay is far below competitive market rates for the industry and the work life balance is basically non existent. The company owns you, they decide when you do anything from seeing your family to sleeping.

Pretty repetitive. You do the same thing everyday. Management isn’t bad. Sometimes nonexistent but they’ll still stay on top of you even when the works been completed.

Most of the experience was decent, very understanding if time off is needed. As a part timer they will deduct your hours as needed so I would suggest being full time to lock yourself in.

The metrics are impossible there isn’t any work life balance and they micromanage. Management is not on one accord at all. They lie to you in training and the shifts are ridiculous

Great place to work if your hired externally

Grew within the company. It's nice that they reward work quality over degrees. However, over time, I noticed that while I was a high-performing associate, I made much less than an associate hired externally. In addition, I felt like I couldn't advance because directors didn't want to lose my skill set on their team, so they held me back. Ultimately, what caused me to leave was the lack of job growth or movement (feeling that I was being penalized for my unique work product) and subpar market pay for my skills.

I wouldn't recommend anyone to consider working here, because you're in for a surprise. Basically they require every employee to do everything for less pay. And they don't have different departments like regular dealerships do. Managements are no help in your development as well.

Good Sales Training

Pros: CarMax has a good training program. Good benefits and management support. Cons: Every time there was a change to the compensation plan, it was always to cut our pay. Did not see a pay increase in years. Coworkers who had been with the company for 10+ years also mentioned they never saw an increase in the compensation plan the entire time they were there.

Lack of management. poor planning

I worked at CarMax 7 years and everyday it gets worse and worst. Management not planning your week out don’t know if your working Saturday until the Friday before that day. Management telling you one thing and not doing it. I’m glad I got out. I would not recommend no one working at the Jacksonville store.

Great Starter Job

Overall great company culture. You work 5 days a week one Saturday off a month. Business office manager pushed a lot of people to quit including myself. One annoying thing is the Business Office waits until the last customer to leave due to Sales. The store closes at 9pm but you can be there until 11pm waiting for the sale of a vehicle. I made a lot of great connections and memories there that I wont forget

Has its up & downs but overall ok

Not a bad job. Wish they would pay more. In inventory you’re doing a lot of walking to & from cars so if you aren’t an outdoors person this isn’t for you. Cleaning inspecting & getting cars ready to be sold is really priority. The schedule is why I give it a 3 because you never know when you are off. It changes every 2 weeks so if you want a weekend just 1 weekend to yourself you’d have to use personal time which sucks because majority if not all dealerships are closed weekends especially Sunday but not Carmax.. it’s a lot of OT 10 hour shifts 5 days a week & pay isn’t that great even with the overtime. It should be higher considering the amount of work that needs to be done but it is what it is. It’s an ok job & you can advance but it’s one of those things where you have to be seen (coming in early, staying late, doing things outside of your job description, volunteering for any community service or any event Carmax has going on) have to be the best in your position which can be a lot. The best thing is the benefits, I’ve purchased wholesale cars from them at extremely low prices which I could’ve resold for triple. Dental vision etc are really good as well. Overall I would recommend working here if you’re single no kids & love to work.

Great training for the job, Company is okay, management isn't the best

Been working here for a few years now, switching from "traditional" to "cross functional". I enjoyed working here until recently. I (my colleagues included) feel over worked and just straight burnt out. The pay is NOT worth the work we're doing. Don't get me wrong, the company as a whole isn't that bad, and the people I work with ARE GREAT, but management, seems like they don't care about the employees besides each other. CarMax gives great training and you learn a lot, I much rather take the training I learned and find another job that pays WAY more. The company and management seem to "care" about their employees, but that doesn't seem like the case, and it's frowned upon to even mention a "union". In all, Carmax is an okay company to work for, but pay isn't worth the work we're doing. I say take the training you've received and RUN.
