Good team of people. Long hours. Consistent work. A lot of different things to do. Room to grow. Benefits are good, 401k and employee stock purchase program. Winter is not fun.

Horrible place to work

I wouldn’t recommend CarMax to anyone looking for a job. There’s not place for growth, as the tenure is short. The pay is horrible especially when having to work in any weather, under bad management. Don’t trust the unprofessional leadership that lies within the company.

Horrible

Treated horrible and belittled by every other department. Especially sales, the service ops side of things as a whole is treated horrible. Job itself isn't hard but a lot of responsibilities.

productive place, great people, flexible schedule

working here is fun, wash cars, help porters bring in cars and pick up cars they’re taking. all of the employees and leads are mostly chill. good work environment all around.

I loved working for Carmax, lots of overtime opportunities.

I was an Inventory Associate and I became really good at my job that they made me a trainer to train the new hires which was a wonderful experience, I was only there for 4 months but if I could go back and choose not to quit I would've it was honestly the most fun job I have ever had, you are constantly walking, climbing in and out of vehicles and learning more about the company and advancements. You definitely get your workout here which is amazing.

Some people were power hungry and became unnecessarily bossy.

Fun Place

I made great people at Carmax. The job was repetitive boring at times but depending on the location the people/coworkers made it better. Management was biased some didn’t have the skills to be a supervisor. But overall decent, good pay, good benefits, and loads of overtime.

Attendance policy will get the best of you

Pretty repetitive. You do the same thing everyday. Management isn’t bad. Sometimes nonexistent but they’ll still stay on top of you even when the works been completed.

Has its up & downs but overall ok

Not a bad job. Wish they would pay more. In inventory you’re doing a lot of walking to & from cars so if you aren’t an outdoors person this isn’t for you. Cleaning inspecting & getting cars ready to be sold is really priority. The schedule is why I give it a 3 because you never know when you are off. It changes every 2 weeks so if you want a weekend just 1 weekend to yourself you’d have to use personal time which sucks because majority if not all dealerships are closed weekends especially Sunday but not Carmax.. it’s a lot of OT 10 hour shifts 5 days a week & pay isn’t that great even with the overtime. It should be higher considering the amount of work that needs to be done but it is what it is. It’s an ok job & you can advance but it’s one of those things where you have to be seen (coming in early, staying late, doing things outside of your job description, volunteering for any community service or any event Carmax has going on) have to be the best in your position which can be a lot. The best thing is the benefits, I’ve purchased wholesale cars from them at extremely low prices which I could’ve resold for triple. Dental vision etc are really good as well. Overall I would recommend working here if you’re single no kids & love to work.

It was a good place to work sometimes hectic. Management was good at times. On days it wasn’t good was when different departments expected you to take on there responsibilities

Not the best place to work but decent

Working here was decent, good benefits and my location’s staff in general was cool & easy to get along with except the occasional person who’s entire life was their job. The location itself is a good place to work but HR sucks and pretends to care about their employees. Constant HR visits to the store to address issues or see how things are going but when you have a genuine concern, any care about employees goes out the window.

pay is ehhh for the work they drop on you and expect you to do with little to no training. I've seen 4 people get fired before they go on vacation.

Pretty Good

Pretty good place to work. Room for advancement and always busy. They like to treat staff with food and games. Benefits and pay are pretty good too. You can learn and grow along with the company.

Didn't accommodate

I was placed in photos "indefinitely. Either I took pics too slow or they were too sloppy. I would get rushed especially when there was a bunch of cars in the photo booth queue. When asked to change I had to change the time time I came in the mornings. Carmax is a good work place but I felt like that accommodated for everyone but me.

Decent workolace

Coworkers are great, managers are kind of bad. Not a great place to go if you want to grow in the workplace. Can be a good part time job. Turnover is high

Underpaid, undertrained, unappreciated.

Not a difficult job, more of a chaotic one. It’s a great job if you need to get your foot in the door within the auto industry though. Company culture is a bit cultish. Coworkers and management are constantly telling you how you will never find anywhere better than Carmax. Management only cares about making numbers and has little interest in genuinely knowing their employees; but a 5 minute chat will happen here and there that will give you the impression they care. The last thing worth mentioning, I have never worked anywhere that took so much pride in firing people. They even have a term for it to be used around the store to avoid HR issues, they call it “promotion to permanent customer”. Funny at first, but after seeing a multitude of good people leave either from termination or frustration it became not so humorous. My advice, if you REALLY need a job and like cars, this is not a bad stepping stone. But you will grit your teeth in frustration doing it, be wary.

Great place to work if you are a good worker!

Ive been working at CarMax for a 4 years and its a great place to work especially if you're a heads down worker. Ive seen the good and the bad about the company but what I can say is this place really does care about its associates.Pros:EmployeesPayLearning new thingsGrowthTime offCons:Managers (could just be my location)Every department relying on you Management wants used cars to be perfectNeeding to clean dirty vehicles with a short time window (40 minutes). Again these vehicles need to be perfect..Working in all weatherBad workers hurt the team. (I worked with a lot of unmotivated people, just my experience).Attendance policy (this could fall under pros and cons. The attendance policy works on a points system and to be honest its hard to get fired just from attendance which helps but also hurts the team when associates call out to much.)

Unprofessional and discriminatory

Interviewed with 3 managers felt rushed and unprofessional I was left seated in the customer waiting room for 20 minutes past my interview time. Managers were not friendly

You're just a body to fill a position.

Typical day at work was receiving used cars from haulers to start the reconditioning process. Other tasks included; touch up on cleaning cars, scanning cars for location, putting price/buyers guides on, taking cars off lot for specific repairs, pulling cars for transfer and sometimes taking pictures of the cars for the website.Inventory associates are out in the elements; they let you come in during lightening and thunder, but you are basically out in the hot sun all day. They bought a refrigerator to keep drinks and water cold and Management said that workers should be "grateful" for it...the place has been open for years, and they are just now get a refrigerator for the inventory staff.What I did learn, was that there is no organization to training. The manager just throws you with a different person, who's ever around really, and expects others to train you. The like to refer to this as "Peer training". This is not optimal as anyone knows, because when you aren't shown something or not shown correctly, the manager gives attitude and will show you and say, "now you know." Managers are lazy and 'always in a meeting'. Management will allow you to move to a different position when it best suits them and their needs otherwise, you'll hear the 6 months rule. The other big issue with management there, is they try to pull off the "we're like a family" culture, but really they only care about their numbers. They mandatorily made everyone work O.T. for just over 2 months straight, to try to win a stupid contest and to "get the numbers up". You are just a body. They -

I got to see the sun come up every morning, and I listened to music or podcasts while I worked, and some coworkers.

缺点

Management, Mandatory overtime, Trying to locate specific cars is ridiculous, Constant changing of processes.

Great Experience

Literally the best job i've ever had, great pay and great company with great morals and employer-employee relationships. The worst part about the job wasn't even the job, it was the weather.
