Love the work. I love teaching the students but the company reduced our pay and got rid of pay raises. It is an easy to use platform and there are great Facebook support groups.
Very early hours, reduced oay
Work as much or as little as you want. Lots of workshops and other training opportunities to help you feel comfortable. Only complaint is that it only pays about $20/hr, but requires a bachelor’s degree and other certification
Kids are so adorable
No guarantee of work or pay, can take 3-6 months to get parents to start signing up for your classes
I’ve worked for VIPKID for 4 years and am on my 8th contract. I’ve had a positive experience overall. There have been growing pains as the company has expanded, but that happens with all businesses. I’m thankful for the work/life balance as I set my own hours.
Flexibility, great kids, just teaching
Mercy of the parents for bookings and ratings
I was so excited to work for VIP KID, but since COVID hit it is really hard to get clients since so many people applied. It seems there are not enough students for everybody. And now they expect you to pay to get more students? You do not get raises. You get $7 per class, which is crazy considering the amount of prep that goes with each class. There are no raises and the only ways to get more money per class are if you book over a certain amount of students. You can be an amazing teacher and not get students (because they cannot find you out of the millions of options) or you can be a subpar teacher that uses no props and still get booked. It seems so random to me. You have to work in the middle of the night if you want a lot of students it seems.
You get to work from home and set your own hours (kind of) its only from like 11pm-8am
horrible pay and hours and no benefits at all, no support and you have to buy all of your supplies
If you don’t mind getting up early, you will enjoy this job. VIPKID had a strict cancellation policy, so if you have classes booked and you try to cancel several they will try to guilt you. This is a Chinese company. Cultures are different. I feel they are more controlling with our liberties than what they should be but like I said different cultures. It’s easy it make $1,000 a month if you can wake up early. They are 13 hours ahead of CST.
Good money, good kids
Cancellation policies, hard to move up or get raises
This company is and has been taking an advantage of the very people who have played a mayor part in growing their business- the teachers. They set out a lot of red tape and will side with parents over you in a heartbeat. If a parent leaves you a negative feedback and it is found to be false they will not remove the review so that other parents cannot see. I could go on and on since I have been working with them for 3 years now but I will stop there.
The children and it WAS the pay but that’s gone now.
Where do I start????
I have truly enjoyed working for VIPkid. However, the bookings are not stable throughout the year and I feel as though VIPkid continues to hire new teachers when their teacher bank is already saturated. Those of us who have been with VIPkid almost 3 years (or longer) are experiencing very low bookings. For many of us, this is our only job as we have put all of our time and effort into being great teachers only to have it seem as though we have been "lost" during the booking sessions. It's very frustrating as I truly love the company but need it to be more stable throughout the year.
I was contracted to work at the head office for one year in Beijing. It was less than that as they broke their own contract by laying me as we all about 40 percent of the company unexpectedly with no warning or regard for seniority. They did not respect work life balances. You're expected to work on what management tells you at any time with out explanation or reason. Aside from that on the surface I do think this company has or at one point had great values. My coworker s we bright young individuals with love for what they do. I think this company went from costumer centered to stakeholder centered
I love this job, but they haven't given me a raise in the three years that I've worked for VIPKID even though my credentials have changed. I have earned a Master's degree, a teaching certification and a TESOL certification in the time that I've worked for them, but they still pay me the lowest amount on the pay scale that they offer. I have taken less hours with them recently because it's frustrating to be paid so little when I feel I am worth much more. I have asked for a raise, but they have very strict requirements for a raise, which includes working an ungodly amount of hours in a single contract period. If they don't change their policy, I will work for a different ESL company.
Great experience at VIPKID. Love it and hope to continue for the future. Making connections with these children is precious and inspiring. I like working in the early hours and having my day to myself.
started losing students suddenly for no reason, plus really hard to argue if a parent or other gave a bad review
so, you read it, plus getting up in the middle of the night is really super hard for me. I would splash cold water on my face, have caffeinated drinks, but I constantly felt terrible. Could never rise to their standard to get a raise
pay is ok
no guarantee of student, too much power for parents to choose out of 40, 00 tutors or more... impossible number for an already massively populated china.
Thank you for sharing your thoughts. We regard our students as the heart of our platform, and teachers like you, the lifeblood that keeps it running. We apologize that we did not live up to expectations for you. If you’d like to discuss your concerns directly with us, please send in a ticket and our team will be in touch shortly.
I love VIPKID. If you're good at this job, it will reward you tremendously, both financially and personally! In my experience the best performing teachers here are simply high energy and love what they do; that happiness that shines out while your teaching is what keeps them coming back, period. The kids are A M A Z I N G . They are almost ALL so happy and respectful in class. Curriculum is okay, could definitely be better. I do love having flexibility to adapt the curriculum based on the student's needs! The hours are rough and take a lot of getting used-to (early morning hours). Hours aren't guaranteed, so your schedule is affected by demand, holidays, etc. The raise policy is absolutely terrible - you need to jump through many hoops in order to qualify for a raise, and you only have the option to qualify every-other contract, so once a year. I'm going on my 2nd year with no raise. If you're good, you can get short notice bookings during Peak Times, which is an extra $4 hourly. Staff at HQ really tries to build a supportive community - they are adorable and you can tell they really care. That said, the cancellation policy SUCKS - i only recommend if you are in good health and if you either don't have young children, or, if you do have young children, that you have a reliable support/backup for child care- cancellations add up quickly , and once you hit your maximum, an automatic "review of contract" is triggered where they will lock you out of teaching for 2 weeks, Highly recommend overall. love vipkid!
the kids are great, flexibility, ability to adapt curriculum, wonderful training resources, friendly and supportive staff.
raise policy, cancellation policy, curriculum isn't always great, the time difference is rough
I am a current VIPKID teacher and am on my 4th contract. I love this company and believe it is the best company to ever work for!! They truly care about every employee and always offers incentives for teachers and other staff. It's also great to work for this company because it gives you the ability to set the days you want to work. You can also teach while you travel. I have not ever experienced anything negative with this company. I plan on being with the company for many more years. It has provided me the opportunity to have a career and balance my home life and do more with family and friends.
Positive environment, flexible work schedule, many incentives, and tons of support.
The VIPKID culture is trendy, exciting and ever-changing. It is fast-paced. They are very strict and customer service driven. They are a Forbes Top 100 Company for remote places to work for very good reason!
The new relationsips are the best! Learning about other cultures is awesome.
They have too many I.T. problems because they are continually updating or changing their system, almost monthy.
